A lot of people criticize the NIMBY or “Not in My Back Yard” mentality. I think it’s great. If people stand up for their own interests, then you get a more efficient distribution of externalities. Locally focused organizations are often the most effective because the people are much more deeply invested. That’s likely the case with Louisiana Bucket Brigade, which is a New Orleans, LA based non-profit “environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state’s oil refineries and chemical plants.” It’s all about holding industry accountable for the pollution that they create.
How does Louisiana Bucket Brigade do their work? They give “easy-to-use air sampling devices” to “people who live next to industry to document pollution in their neighborhoods.” They combine this with “education, assistance with organizing, media and other types of sampling (water, soil, seafood),” to maximize the impact that they can make on the communities that they work in (you can read more about their programs here). I would be really excited that finally something on here is in my city of New Orleans. Not only that, but around the corner from me! Unfortunately, I already began the hiring process here once and stopped once I found out what the job actually is. Grassroots Community Organizer sounded like my dream job, but it’s actually one of those door-to-door deals, raising some awareness but mostly money. Also, I believe your wage is the commission of what you raise. I know this kind of job is perfect for some people, so power to you if it’s you! Personally, I was really disappointed.
