Historically Minnesota’s economy has focused on agriculture, and the state leads in producing sugar beets, sweet corn, green beans, and farm-raised turkeys. Today Minnesota’s food focus has shifted toward finished food products with companies such as Hormel, Land O’Lakes, Schwann, and General Mills. The nation’s largest privately held company, Cargill, which has a large food arm, is also based in Minnesota.
Minnesota is also home to the first indoor shopping mall and current largest shopping mall as well as corporate headquarters of several retail stores such as Target, Best Buy, and SuperValu.
The health and medicine industry is growing in Minnesota. Rochester is home to the Mayo Clinic and UnitedHealth Group. MedTronic and St. Jude Medical, along with university research, are paving a path toward a strong biotechnology industry in the state.
