Looking for an entry level job or internship in publishing? This is an overview of how to approach the search and a list of companies that might have relevant entry level and internship opportunities.

The word’s still out on whether publishing’s a dying business, but if you dream of working with books every day, a job in publishing may be for you.

Most entry-level jobs in publishing are at an assistant or associate level, depending on how much experience you have going in. While a job as an editor or agent springs to mind immediately, a publishing house has other departments in addition to the standard finance, human resources, and technology departments. Some other areas you could work in include:

Sales
Publicity
Contracts and Legal
Marketing
Production
Design

There are lots of publishing presses beyond the big ones, so keep your mind open to a small press when looking for a publishing job. To get a job in publishing, a love of books is practically required. Beyond that, have a degree in a relevant field, excellent communication and writing skills, and an internship or two. And be prepared to talk about what you’re reading in your interview.
