Despite the fact that college is a time for absorbing information and learning new things, I often hear students claim that they “live in a bubble.” They feel separated from the real world and often don’t keep up on what’s happening in the news. I think that the growth of the Internet and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter has helped to change this (even since I was in college a few years ago), but the truth is that most of our nation’s young people are woefully uninformed on important issues facing the world. Americans for Informed Democracy is a Washington, DC based non-profit that is trying to change that. They empower “young people in the United States to address global challenges such as poverty, disease, climate change, and conflict through awareness and action” by promoting “just and sustainable solutions at the campus, community, and national level.”
Americans for Informed Democracy was founded after 9/11 by students who were surprised by the “intense sympathy and solidarity” that they received while studying abroad. This showed them the “possibility for a global community of shared values,” and they responded by creating AID to spread awareness about how people of the world can work together to solve some of the big problems that we face. AID is very much a youth focused and youth run organization, so there are some great opportunities for entry level jobs. Their Jobs page includes an Administrative Assistant position along with Fellowships and Regional Coordinator positions. Additionally, there’s a Global Development Coordinator position posted on Idealist. If you share AID’s ideals, then get informed about them, and then apply.
