I downloaded my first MP3 from an AOL chat room. I was an extremely early adopter when it came to “file sharing,” but after the lawsuits started and some of my favorite services were shut down, I gave up. Torrenting became all of the rage, and I missed the boat. I’ve heard a lot about BitTorrent, but I never realized that they are a real company with more than 100 employees. They’re based in San Francisco, CA, and they are “passionate about building a better, smarter Internet through distributed computing.” That may sound like an unattainable mission for such a small company, but it’s not. BitTorrent’s protocols account for 20-40% of the Internet’s traffic, which means that the company has a ton of influence..
BitTorrent is often associated with piracy, as it’s “the most efficient way to move large files across the internet.” In reality it is the world’s largest legal content distribution source. Since many of you probably have no idea who torrents work, I highly recommend that you watch this video (click here if it doesn’t load):
Many companies that operate in the file sharing space run into problems with developing a sustainable business model. BitTorrent has a few interesting ideas. One is BitTorrent Plus, a premium app that offers a far fuller feature set than their free download. Another is advertising. With millions of people using BitTorrent to download content, there is a huge audience that can be reached with promotional material like a book sample or bonus materials. That’s what Tim Ferriss did, and he drove close to a million people to his book’s Amazon page through ads on BitTorrent. If you’d like to help this business model continue to develop, take a look at BitTorrent’s Jobs page. Right now they have a few positions that look great for a new or recent grad including Ad Trafficker/Analyst, Jr. Account Manager, Strategist / Copywriter, Visual Web Designer, Android Engineer, QA Engineer – Advertising, and a few other technical positions.
