Have you ever grabbed a photograph off the Internet for an assignment? I’ll bet most students have done this at some point. But how many actually think about whether or not they have the right to use that image? It may not seem important, but what if that photo is being published in a newspaper, magazine, or blog? The person who created the image needs to be compensated. The same can be said for other creative works like videos, illustrations, music, and more. The problem is that individual creators don’t want to spend their time selling their work and protecting their copyrights–they want to keep putting out more quality work. That’s why companies like Seattle, WA based Corbis exist. They buy and sell the rights for creative intellectual property. They have a massive catalog, so if you needed an image of fly fisherman with a mountain in the background at sunset, they have what you need. In other words they bring efficiency to a market that would otherwise be extremely fragmented and inefficient.
Corbis works through a number of different brands for different types of intellectual property. These include Corbis Images (images), Corbis Motion (motion/video content), Veer (photographs/illustrations/fonts), and GreenLight (music/video/film/tv/celebrities/iconic properties). Rights management may not seem all that exciting, but it’s pretty cool that Corbis is able to help creative professionals get their work out to people who can use it in new and interesting ways. I think best way to get a feel for Corbis is to browse the sites mentioned above so that you can get a feel for what kind of content they license and how the process works. Once you do that, then you can take a look at Corbis’ Jobs page. There are a number of positions worth taking a closer look at including Sales Representative (New York, NY), User Experience Designer (Seattle, WA), Sales Account Executive (Hong Kong), Designer (Calgary, Canada), and Account Executive (Hong Kong). They also have a few internships posted, so that may indicate other entry level opportunities in the future.
