I like skiing (even if I’ve only done it twice), but I like fishing, volleyball, walking my dog, and staying out of the hospital more. I can’t get over the fear that I’ll injure myself skiing and keep myself from doing all of the things that I truly love to do. I’m sure for a lot of skiers, they have the opposite apprehension (like my buddy Jason who used a ski trip to describe Quality Events in our Job Search Prep course). The only other bad thing about skiing is that once you get over the fear of injury, you have to get over the price of lift tickets. Or you did. Liftopia is a San Francisco, CA based company that aims to “help skiers and snowboarders get out on the slopes more often, and help alpine resorts generate incremental revenue.”
Some businesses have high marginal costs, and some businesses have high fixed costs. Ski resorts fall into the latter category. No matter how many people show up on a given day, they’re going to run the chair lifts and possibly make the snow. There’s a huge incentive to offer discounts, but resorts don’t want their deals to cannibalize sales that would have happened without the discount. That’s why Liftopia offers non-refundable, date-specific tickets. Skiers and snowboarders who are willing to commit get an amazing deal, and the resorts can lock in business well in advance. It’s win-win-win (the third win is for Liftopia who presumably gets a cut of every sale). If you love hitting the slopes, it would be hard to imagine a better place to work that Liftopia. Check out their Careers page and pay special attention to these positions: Seasonal Ski Support Reprsentative and Partner Services Representative. There are also a few positions that require a few more years of experience. They also offer the option to apply for an unlisted position.
