I have a favorite Yankees blog, and I occasionally participate in a Cornell Hockey forum. I follow a few athletes on Twitter, and sometimes get into sports debates on Facebook. I’d imagine that I’m a pretty typical sports fan in terms of my social media and web use–my attention is fragmented across a lot of different sites. LockerDome is a St. Louis, MO based startup that offers a social media platform to help “professional athletes, brands, media personalities, and other sports properties” reach their fans wherever they’re consuming content online. The idea is that LockerDome acts “as a social hub [for athletes and brands] to amplify their overall social media strategy.”
LockerDome started as kind of a “LinkedIn for sports”–a place where you can keep track of your sports life. They gained some momentum, but it wasn’t quite the business that they were looking to build. As a result, LockerDome pivoted towards their current model of building communities and offering a publishing platform. I find their messaging a bit confusing because they seem to be mid-pivot, but the site is getting 10 million monthly uniques and the company just announced raising $6 million in funding, so things are definitely moving in the right direction. There’s obviously a huge advertising opportunity on an audience of that size, and the audience should keep growing as LockerDome helps more and more big names in sports expand their reach across social networks. Good opportunities in sports marketing don’t come around all that often, so you need to visit LockerDome’s Internships page ASAP. Right now they’re looking for:
The word is that LockerDome will be putting a lot of that funding towards opening a monetization focused New York City office, so stay posted for those positions.
