Ahoy, matey! It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day. I first learned of this bilge-sucking holiday when I was but a wee lad (actually it was freshman year of college from Dave Barry’s syndicated column in my school’s newspaper). Now that I’m an old salt, I tend to lose patience with all of the pirate talk after the first few Facebook posts and wish that some of my friends would walk the plank already. But I promise to have a good attitude this year, which is why we’re going to take a look at Pirate Brands. They’re a Sea Cliff, NY based healthy snack (I hear they prevent scurvy) company that is behind brands like Pirate’s Booty, Smart Puffs, and Potato Flyers. Could there be a better company to feature today?
I don’t eat any snacks from Pirate Brands, so my biggest brand association with them goes back to 2002 when they had a mini-scandal over inaccurate nutritional information (back then they were known as Robert’s American Gourmet Food). The company paid for its rapscallion behavior and was rightfully keelhauled by the press, but they avoided Davy Jones’ Locker. Now everything is shipshape, and in 2010 the company rebranded by raising the Jolly Roger and going with the name Pirate Brands. The market for healthy snacks is huge, and Pirate Brands’ is hoping to hit $500 million in sales by 2015 with products that are all-natural,gluten free, trans fat free, preservative free, artificial sweetener free, and kosher. If you’re ready to climb Jacob’s Ladder and join Pirate Brands, check out their Careers page. They say that they’ll post specific positions soon, but I’ve been watching for years, and I don’t think that has changed. So stop being a landlubber, give your résumé the heave ho, and go get those doubloons.
