Getting a dog is one of the best things that I’ve ever done. Seriously, how could you not love this guy? I’ve been taking his training very seriously, and it has been a really rewarding process. Working with animals often brings out the best in people. That’s why the Prison Pet Partnership is such a good idea. It’s a Gig Harbor, WA based non-profit that “gives inmates the opportunity to learn valuable pet industry-related vocational skills to use in finding employment when they resume their lives outside of prison.” They take dogs from animal rescues and train them to be service dogs. Since most dogs aren’t cut out for the service life, the rest are rehomed as “Paroled Pets.”
In a way, an inmate and a dog at an animal rescue have a lot in common. They’ve lost the life they used to know, and they need to work on some life skills to be able to get back to where they were (or some place better than that). Prison Pet Partnership helps both the inmates and dogs do this. The dogs are trained to be “able to respond to the needs of individuals who experience seizures, those who live with various illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis, and those who have multiple disabilities, by assisting them in their daily activities and by giving them increased independence.” The inmates can gain Pet Care Technician Certification for their work training, boarding, and grooming dogs. They can learn office skills as well. The end goal is for people and animals to live better, fuller lives. If you’d like to work towards that, check out Prison Pet Partnership’s Idealist page. Right now they’re looking for a Training Instructor. They call it entry level, though you definitely need strong experience with training dogs.
