Your face is how you interact with the world (even though the Internet is doing its best to change that). Like it or not, how you look matters whether you live in New York City or a small village in India. Cleft lips and palates not only have a tremendous cosmetic effect that can cause shame and isolation, but they can also greatly inhibit the ability to eat and speak. Luckily, clefts are very easily repaired. Smile Train is a New York, NY based non-profit that believes that “every child born with a cleft – anywhere in the world – should have the opportunity to live a full and productive life.” That’s why they’re working towards making one million smiles (they’re already 88.29% of the way there).
Smile Train has a great intro video that explains how their model works, so I highly recommend that you watch it (click here if it doesn’t load):
With as little as $250 and 45 minutes, Smile Train can completely change a life. You can learn more about how meaningful this can be by reading their stories. Smile Train is not without controversy, though. There was a failed merger with Operation Smile (a “competing” non-profit), and I’ve found a few other criticisms across the Internet. It’s hard to tell how much of this is real and how much is politics, so do your own due diligence before you take a look at Smile Train’s Careers page. Right now there aren’t any full-time jobs posted there, but there is a Receptionist position posted on Idealist. It looks like a great way to get familiar with how an international non-profit operates.
