I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. The Nerdery is a Bloomington, MN based company (they also have an office in Chicago, IL) that partners “with creative minds and big thinkers to engineer and build award-winning interactive projects.” They’ve also managed to win a few awards for themselves including being named to the Inc. 5000 for five years in a row. This year they only came in at #1,041 with 305% three-year growth to $26.2 million in revenue. That’s ridiculously impressive.
The Nerdery’s shtick may feel a little gimmicky, but it really seems to be working from a branding perspective. They’ve done work with big names like Best Buy, Cheerios, Calvin Klein, Nordstrom, and lots of others–you can see it here. You should also read about The Nerdery’s method, which will help you better understand what kind of projects they take on and how they approach them. After reading that, you may want to take some time to meet the Nerds. How did The Nerdery find so many happy nerds in a market where nerds are at a premium? By being named #1 on Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal’s Best Places to Work for two years in a row. Luckily for you, there are still Jobs at The Nerdery for both nerds and those who don’t mind being surrounded by nerds. The Nerdery’s Jobs page is pretty awesome, so I’m just going to send you there to look at all of the postings–they have positions in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Remote. If you’re not quite sure about Nerdery, you can sign up for an informational interview and you can even apply for an unlisted position. They really do an incredible job with their recruiting, and it’s because they recognize that making themselves available in a variety of ways is a great way to connect with talent.
