I’m always on the lookout for startup non-profits. Even though they don’t offer the most (any?) certainty when it comes to jobs, I think that they offer some of the most exciting opportunities out there for new and recent college grads who are service minded. That’s why I got excited when I came across The Public Learning Media Laboratory. They’re a Boston, MA based non-profit organization that “applies new scientific findings and technological solutions to create systemic improvement in elementary and middle school education.” In other words, they’re devoted to making the most of the billions of dollars that we as a nation are investing in education. By providing tools to help teachers be more effective, The Public Learning Media Laboratory has the ability to really push educational outcomes forward for our nation’s youth.
The Public Learning Media Laboratory’s main educational goals are focused on “providing tools that teach math, science and information literacy.” I really like the “information literacy” part, because it always boggles my mind how many people struggle with understanding basic statistics (and how much the media and politicians abuse statistics). The core of The Public Learning Media Laboratory’s programs is based on providing “educators with free, high-quality, web-based instructional and exploration tools, accompanied by technological and pedagogical models, they can use to help students develop clearer, stronger, quicker understanding of challenging concepts.” You can check out these tools and models at Glean.org. There are already some cool tools up, and there are more to come for 2011. That’s where you could come in. The Public Learning Media Laboratory isn’t explicitly hiring, but their Get Involved page mentions that they plan on adding to their team in January (they say 2010, but I think that they mean 2011). Reach out to them and see what’s available.
