When I was growing up, I was anything but a youth against establishment. My school had a dress code, and I’m not sure that I ever violated it (ok, I may have forgotten to wear a belt once or twice). Even outside of school, I wore the same khaki pants that I had to wear at school (but with sneakers and a t-shirt of course)–I think I outgrew my last pair of jeans in 7th grade. It shouldn’t be a surprise that I’ve never owned anything from Volcom. In case you’re not familiar with the brand, they’re a San Clemente, CA based “designer, marketer and distributor of premium quality young men’s and young women’s clothing, accessories and related products.” The company was founded in 1991, and came out of Orange County boardsports culture.
While Volcom’s branding is all about youth fighting the establishment (which is even more relevant today than it was 20 years ago when they started), their product lines are focused on creating “distinctive combinations of fashion, functionality and athletic performance.” The only weird part about this is that Volcom is actually owned by a multi-national holding company called Kering (this happened in 2011). That doesn’t sound very anti-establishment to me, but their brand image seems to have stayed the same–just check out their products and their website. If you don’t mind getting your paychecks from the man while you’re fighting the man, take a look at Volcom’s Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for a Denim Developer, a Women’s Graphic Artist, an Accounts Payable Clerk, a Sales Coordinator, and an Associate Production Artist – Tech Packs (can’t link to the jobs because of the software they use to post the jobs). There are also a ton of retail opportunities available.
